All babies love being cuddled and touched, skin contact is essential to the nurturing and an important part of the bonding process.
When giving baby massage, focus on the chest and back, using light, smooths strokes. Do NOT massage the head. The best time to massage your baby is at the end of the day, before breastfeeding and bathing, or just after the bath as long as you are in a warm room. If at any point you sense your baby is not enjoying the massage, then stop. The massage should only go on if you are both enjoying it.
Make sure the room is warm, sa babies feel the cold, and their body temperatures can drop quickly. Have a soft cloth or towel for your baby to lie on and if you are using oil, warm it up before applying. In India, a blend of coconut and sesame oil is often used in baby massage, although almond, apricot or grapeseed oils are also suitable. Ideally the oil should be cold pressed and organic.
Babies usually enjoy it and sleep better afterwards, the important thing to remember when working with babies or children is that their bodies are still developing, so they must be treated gently.
Enjoy bonding with your baby! Love Nunu
